x every day: Japan day 6

12 April 2008

I cannot remember the morning. I think we went to Starbucks for coffee, in a rush to get to Kyoto Station to catch the train down to Uji. Then we realized we had an extra hour to get there, so we dawdled a bit more and stopped in a convenience store or two.

In Uji, we met up with Tei and Yukiko, friends of Aspen's friend Stacy. They showed us around Byodo-in and to a few other shrines and temples in Uji. We ate lunch at a great ramen place and they showered us with graciousness, generosity, and gifts.

Back in Kyoto at our ryoken, we rested and split up. I walked a square through the market, refreshed with new alleys, shops and sites. We joined up again to get to Starbucks at 8:30pm to meet Shinobu, another friend of Stacy's. She and three other friends took us to an izakaya, a Japanese pub where you order tons of small dishes for group consumption. It was ruckus and fun, but Erik and I were exhausted and went back to the hotel to call it an early night, while everyone else went on to another bar and karaoke.
